What is a LAN?
LAN (Local Area Network) refers to any collection of devices in one physical location that is linked through wired or wireless connections, enabling computers, laptops, smartphones, printers, tablets, IoT devices, and even game consoles to communicate. They’re often built using Ethernet cables or WiFi and offer access to the Internet, servers, and shared resources like printers; home and office LANs typically consist of either one router (in an office environment) or multiple routers and switches in a larger office building – depending on its nature it might employ either client/server or peer-to-peer architectures.

A wide area network (WAN) connects multiple local area networks over large geographical areas. A WAN may span cities, countries, or continents using technologies like phone lines, satellite links, or cellular radio signals – the internet being the most famous example; many businesses also employ their private WANs for internal purposes.

WAN connections allow people to videoconference with someone in another city, quickly sync data across branch offices, or remotely access a central server. They also help organizations centralize IT infrastructure while cutting costs, as companies only need to purchase network equipment once.

For WANs to operate efficiently, they must be designed for low latency and high bandwidth usage. Network acceleration techniques like data deduplication/compression or traffic shaping (prioritizing applications by importance) may help enhance WAN performance; another way is software-defined WAN (SD-WAN), which continuously monitors WAN performance while automatically selecting optimal routes according to traffic type for every application on a per-application basis.

Organizations without wide area networks would only have access to their building or specific region; with leased lines, MPLS, the public internet, and even cellular connections available, they can work from any part of the world, backup files to another location, and manage fleets of autonomous cars more effectively.
Difference between local area networks and WAN
LAN and WAN networks differ by virtue of being restricted geographically, while WANs span vast areas throughout the country and even internationally. WANs are commonly utilized by large corporations that need to keep all their offices connected across multiple regions; premium telecom circuits often create these networks.

LAN networks can be linked via either Ethernet or WiFi and provide faster and more effective connectivity than their WAN counterparts; however, data transfer speed depends on distance.
